How to Add Fragrance Oil to Candle Wax: 2 Best Methods for Strong Scent Throw

Adding fragrance oil at the wrong temperature or with poor mixing is one of the biggest reasons homemade candles have weak scent throw.

Why Adding Fragrance Oil at the Right Time Matters

Fragrance oils are volatile. If you add them when the wax is too hot, the heat can burn off the scent molecules, resulting in weak or no fragrance. If you add them when the wax is too cool, they may not mix evenly, leading to uneven scent distribution or separation.

The sweet spot for most fragrance oils is when the melted wax has cooled to approximately 65–75°C (149–167°F), depending on your specific wax and fragrance type. Always check the recommended temperature for your fragrance oil.

Method 1: Direct Addition (Simple & Most Common)

This straightforward method works well for most container and small-batch candles.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Cool the wax: After melting your wax completely, remove it from the heat source and let it cool naturally until it reaches the proper temperature (usually 65–75°C). Use an infrared thermometer to check accurately.
  2. Add fragrance oil: Pour the measured amount of fragrance oil (typically 5–10% of the wax weight) directly into the melted wax.
  3. Stir thoroughly: Use a stirring stick or spoon to mix the fragrance oil into the wax until it is completely and evenly incorporated. Stir gently to avoid introducing too many air bubbles.

Tip: Measure your fragrance oil by weight for best accuracy.

Method 2: Double-Pouring Technique (For Even Better Mixing)

This method is excellent for larger batches or when you want maximum scent distribution.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Cool the wax: Let the melted wax sit until it reaches the ideal temperature for adding fragrance.
  2. Add fragrance oil: Pour the fragrance oil into the wax.
  3. Mix by pouring back and forth: Pour the wax-fragrance mixture from one stainless steel container into another, then back again several times. This ensures excellent blending without over-stirring.

Advantages: Achieves very uniform fragrance distribution, especially useful for stronger or thicker fragrance oils.

Key Tips for Maximum Scent Throw

  • Temperature is critical: Adding fragrance when the wax is too hot (>80°C) burns off scent. Too cool (<60°C) causes poor mixing.
  • Usage rate: Start with 6–8% fragrance oil by weight of wax. Some oils can go up to 10%, but never exceed the manufacturer’s maximum.
  • Stir gently but thoroughly: Over-stirring can create bubbles that affect the finish.
  • Test your batch: Always make a small test candle to check both cold throw (unlit scent) and hot throw (when burning).
  • Curing time: Allow your finished candles to cure for at least 24–48 hours (sometimes up to 2 weeks) for the best scent performance.
